Google Logos, oh my!

The topic tons of people are talking about on Facebook is the new Google logo. It's pretty cool the tricks they can do with the web.

For those of you living under a rock who don't use Google, the new logo is made up of a lot of mini dots that move around the screen and look cool. But lets not forget the past logos, here is a link so you can check them out for yourself!

Egg Recall, the real news

The egg recall is getting even bigger, more than 500,000,000 eggs have been recalled. Yes thats right, more than 500 million! I'm posting this just in case you hadn't heard, I want to protect you guys! The news media wants you to stay tuned and watch their commercials so they can make money from you before they give you any info. Here is the straight dope from me.

1 You're 4 times more likely to get sick because of these contaminated eggs.
2 You probably won't get sick but the government would rather you be safe than sorry.
3 For the next few months it's a good idea to make sure eggs are fully cooked and handled safely.
4 Wait a few months before eating raw eggs, egg nog, Hollandaise sauce, or Caesar salad.

Dislike Facebook Scam

I got word from a friend that she had been scammed by the Facebook Dislike button, don't fall for it too!

It's a Facebook app that promises to add a dislike button but instead it totally scams you, spreads itself to all your friends, and make money through advertisements and surveys.  If you see a Facebook app that says it will add a dislike button, run away!

Updated- Sophos has an article about the virus, and if you use Firefox there is a real Firefox app for that.

Inception

This film is worth going to the movies for.

I don't write about movies and I almost never go anymore because most of them suck and aren't worth the $10-15 price. Having said that, Inception is the second best movie of 2010 after Toy Story 3.

It's an action movie, it's a thinking movie, it's a great movie. If you like those kinds of movies go see it at the theatre. Christopher Nolan is known for his thinking movies, this one makes you think, but the ride is fun with really good acting, really good special effects, and a really good story.

Another Facebook Virus

This weekend a few of my friends have gotten the new Facebook virus. What happens is you click on a video link and get infected, than the virus sends itself to all your friends and if they click the link they get infected too. So if you see a video and message on Facebook that look odd, BE CAREFUL!

Updated- You can find more information by reading this article at Sophos.

5 Reasons I Like Country Life

  1. It works. Today I tried logging in to Farmville three times and it never worked. "Due to communication issues with Facebook, you may experience loading issues. Until resolved, some features have been temporarily disabled." I've had lots of issues with Farmville and Social City often. Other games work fine.
  2. It's easier to start and has more depth. When you start the game you have less options so it's simpler and easier to start. However production chains give the game more variety and more depth instead of the standard till, plant, grow, harvest, repeat.
  3. Crops don't wither. Sometimes real life comes up and I don't like being penalized for neglecting my virtual life.
  4. The game feels faster. I don't know why but when I play other farming games they all lag a bit. I've tried different browsers too. Country Life just feels faster and therefore less tedious.
  5. The developers are very responsive. Some of my old critiques were that there needed to be more variety when growing seeds and there needed to be more decorations. Both of these were vastly improved and the developers are still adding lots of content.

    Facebook Login confusion

The buzz around Facebook today is that tons of people are confusing a news article written about Facebook with the real Facebook site. I've linked to the real Facebook site if you're confused, or you can type www.facebook.com in your address bar. If your interested you can read the article written by Mike Melanson and comments at the link below, just remember that it is not the real Facebook site. Some of my friends have relatives using the Spanish version of Facebook so maybe there is some confusion with language as well.

    Better Browsers for Better Games

    Spread Firefox Affiliate Button
I've been asked a lot lately which browser is the best for your social gaming experience. My choice is Firefox. It works great on Windows and Macs. I like it so much because it is so stable compared to Internet Explorer, it is very responsive and fast even if I have a lot of stuff going on, and it is the most powerful browser I've ever used. You can add and customize so many features and make it look the way you like, the best part is that you choose what you want to add so it's exactly what you want. I've added the weather, instant language translaton, a timer, dictionary, converter, price checker, and basketball updates.

Apple (the same company that makes Macs and iPhones) has a good browser called Safari for Windows and Macs. It is stable, responsive, and works very well though there are less features for the advanced user compared to Firefox. The problem is that it looks very ugly if you are using Windows. You'd think a company that makes so many good looking products could make this look good in Windows too.

Chrome is a browser to be feared, but not yet. So far all the social games that I play are working well but many people have told me they had problems. This is the newest browser and will be great in six months to a year but it is no there yet. The Windows version as of today is decent, I've been told the Mac version is much buggier and further behind. The team behind this have a lot of great ideas that this time next year I might switch to Chrome because of the features.

The most popular social games run in Flash so here is a link to make sure you have the newest version. Newer versions fix problems and make your computer more secure, they also occasionally add features.

Making Money in Country Life, Part 2

Part 2 Intro to Chains - You've started planting crops and the money is slowly building up. So far Country Life is simpler than other farming games like Farmville but now is when things start to get interesting. Instead of the old routine of plant, grow, harvest, repeat, Country Life adds a twist with chains.

Grow Clover, Sell Clover, 5 coins profit
Planting and harvesting is what you are used to. Buy the Clover Seeds for 15 coins, harvest, and sell the grown Clover for 20 coins. You made a profit of 5 coins, not bad but you can do better.

Grow Clover, Sell Milk, 10 coins profit
You can add a link in the chain by feeding your grown clover to your cow. Your cow will change the clover into milk and you can sell the milk for even more. This chain looks like this. Buy the Clover Seeds for 15, harvest, feed grown Clover to Cow, your Cow eats the Clover and makes Milk, sell Milk for 25. Now your profit is 10 coins, you just doubled your profits!

Grow Clover, Sell Milk and Honey, 15 coins profit
It doesn't end there, once you've saved up some money you can add to this chain by buying a Beehive. The Bees will wait until your Clover is fully grown and than slowly pollenate them. Remember that for the Bees to work you have to have some fully grown Clover. Your chain will now look like this. Buy the Clover Seeds for 15, Bees Pollinate Clover, harvest, feed grown Clover to Cow, your Cow eats the Clover and makes Milk, your Bees eat the pollen and make Honey, sell Milk for 25 and Honey for 5. That means a profit of 15 coins! Triple your original profit by just adding a cow and a beehive into the mix.

Grow Corn, Sell Eggs, 42 coins profit
But thats not all folks, there is another chain thats useful to newbie players and it uses an entirely different set of crops and animals. Instead of Clover, Bees, and Cows this chain uses Corn and Chickens. Plant Corn seeds (keep in mind they take 20 hours to grow), harvest the corn and feed it to your chickens. Your chickens will lay eggs which you can sell for 102 each! The corn seed cost 60 coins in the end you get eggs worth 102, pretty darn good. The disadvantage is that it takes so long for the corn to grow.

Some big pluses are that the eggs are worth so much and the Chicken Coop only costs 900 coins compared to a Beehive for 2000 coins, or another Holstein Cow for 2500 coins. You only have to sell 9 eggs to break even, compared to 100 jars of Milk, or 400 bottles of Honey. The disadvantage to selling Eggs is that it takes so long for the corn to grow. On the chart below you'll see the chains available to you as a beginner to Country Life and the time it takes to grow the crop it starts with.

HOT TIP - If you're a beginning player who checks Facebook a few times a day you'll make more money and experience using the Clover, Milk, and Honey chain.  However if you check Facebook once a day or less, using the Corn and Egg chain will make you more money.

Making Money in Country Life, Part 1

Part 1 The Basics - A new Facebook game that is a great take on the farming genre. You start with familiar options, plant, grow, and harvest. There are less options for planting which make the initial game simpler. The depth comes in later, instead of selling your crops you can use them to make products which sell for more money but require more time and more items on your farm. You start the game with two crops, clover and wheat. Clover can be used to make milk, honey, and cheese. Wheat can be used for flour, wool, and sweaters. As the items you make get more complicated the money you make increases.

Here is a chart with the buy and sell prices for crops. Remember to sell your crops you have to click on your barn (bottom right) and sell them from there. You can increase your profits by chaining, which I will cover in the next article.

    Top DS Games of 2009

Looking for a great game to play, maybe even one to pick up on sale or used? All of these games are great and the best of 2009. Grand Theft Auto and Mario & Luigi are this authors favs from last year too.

Another plus? Now that Nintendo is has the DSi, DSi XL (and a rumored new system) older systems like the original DS and DS Lite are on sale and easier to find. Now might be the time to pick one up if you haven't already or give one as a gift to your spouse or kids!
